A Review ~ Opus Oils by Veronica Z.

Veronica Z. was the lucky winner of the trio of perfumes from Opus Oils and she was kind enough to put together a review of what she received.

Here's my take on the lush trio of Opus Oils perfumes consisting of Island, Starlet and Isis.
I'll start with the most easy to wear and very relaxing Island. The key notes here are Ginger Flower, Absolute of Pink Lotus, Plumeria, Orange Blossom, Tuberose, Champaca and Coconut Picture garlands of fresh and delicately sweet flowers hung around your neck...Ripening fruit, coconut drinks, tropical sun...Plumeria and Ginger Flower are really leading the way in the beginning, supported by the sweetness of Tuberose and grounded by Champaca and Pink Lotus. The initial blast of fruity brightness and lush floras slowly, like a retreating wave, reveals a heart of well balanced creamy smoothness and a bit of spice. At this point Tuberose and Coconut sound very nice together. It's a very warm and comforting aroma that in turn mellows out to a soft and slightly musky scent of sun warmed skin. By this time you're watching a sunset at the beach hand in hand with your lover...
The next one I tried was Starlet, and boy, what a different animal that is! There's nothing relaxing about this gal, she will take center stage and command all your attention. The notes in Starlet are Rose, Orange Blossom Water Absolute, Neroli and Nutmeg. The Rose and Neroli are impossible to ignore when they want to be heard, however, this is a scent that manages to be very confident and demand attention without being loud and overbearing. It is thick and velvety, very luxurious and almost narcotic in it's power. There's a satisfying musky undertone to it, it is definitely a dirty girl of a burlesque.
Isis plays a completely different drum. If the first two scents could be related to the realm of humans, Isis is a goddess, ancient and mysterious.This perfume has notes of Jasmin, Myrrh, Coconut, Frankincense and Sacred Blue Lotus. It is a river without bottom, dark and slow flowing. This perfume has a strange hold on me, it slows my heartbeat with it's meditative and somber power. It's not easy to wear, but on certain occasions this is the only thing that will do.
All of the Opus Oils perfumes I tried are 100% natural oil perfumes. They felt very nice going on and don't have a greasy after feel. The lasting power is about 3-4 hours on my skin.
I wanted to thank Opus Oils and Justine Crane for the chance to try these unique and beautiful scents.

Derby Luv Review of ROLLER GIRL July 9th, 2007

  
I'm not a perfume-wearing kinda pretty girl. I usually go with the soap, pretty deodorant, hair care products clean-smelling kinda thing. It's because every time I walk into a department store or perfume shop and am assaulted by the overabundant mix of fruity, musky, alcohol-based and overly flowery smells, I usually run for the exit as my eyes tear up and I start coughing. A recently diagnosed allergy condition and asthma explain that long-standing debaucle, but I digress, I'm just usually a clean, soapy smellng girl (except after roller derby practice when I reek).

With that in mind, I was still very curious when I found Opus Oils had released a perfume called ROLLER GIRL, that they said "packed a punch". Trepidatiously, I noted it contained smells of Licorice, Black Cherry, Vanilla, Vetivert, Jasmine, Kewra Attar & Orange Blossom; because I hate licorice. But being devoted to all things roller derby, I stiill was willing to give it a go.

Opus Oils graciously sent me samples of the perfume along with a great T-shirt and some bubbles to blow. You know, like when you were a kid? Anyway, upon first smell, I caught a spicy zing and was concerned, but then waited for a day and opened up a sample and gave it a whiff. It smelled like bubble gum on that go. That was interesting.

So upon the MTLRD's All-Star game when I was going to be sweating, hawking beer from the concession stand, I tried it out. It is a light, to me a sweet bubblegum-esque, spicy kicking scent that held up for the night, and it never once made me sneeze, wheeze, or even go ewwww like I do in elevators with old rose-water covered old women in them.

All in all, it's a wearable, kicky, girly mix that has a zing that's not unattractive. As with any scent or perfume, it won't work for everybody, so I won't say that, but I think it's one I can definitely wear when I want a little extra "punch" to the wind I leave behind me as I skate by.

Here's some particulars:
Roller Girl was conceptualized & designed by Joshua & Kedra Hart.  Opus Oils says, "Roller Girl Perfume was inspired by our love for the rough & tumble game of Roller Derby & for the beautiful, skilled & talented women that play it"... (love that answer!)

When asked if it was a natural scent, Opus Oils said, "The main difference between us and other Perfumes on the market is that all of our fragrances are in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil, (hence the name) so there is never the harsh infusion of alcohol commonly found in so many commercial fragrances. (Fractionated coconut oil is a light textured oil, water clear, which is odorless and tasteless. It is moisturizing and absorbs well leaving your skin silky smooth without that greasy feeling).

Although we do have some come collections that are 100% Natural Perfumes (no synthetic ingredients used whatsoever), Roller Girl is a blend of Natural ingredients (absolutes, attars and essential oils) and perfume oils (synthetic)" ...(honest and scientific, I think they know their stuff!)

To wrap up, Roller Girl Perfume gets two thumbs up from me, because I only found one perfume other than this one that I liked, and it was in an airport duty free shop and I don't remember the name, but it was something that reminded me of the beach. Anyhoo... buy a bottle and try it out, you won't be disappointed!

OPUS OILS: Perfume Collections From the Burlesque To the Divine

Opus Oils is a perfume brand based both in Hollywood and Paris, which proposes several collections of perfumes that are whimsical, narrative, and retro in their appeal. We received a press release regarding their latest creation, a burlesque fragrance called Roller Girl "inspired by our love for the rough and tumble game of Roller Derby & the beautiful, skilled & talented women that play it."
Visiting their website, we were drawn towards their for-her and for-him wormwood fragrance duo, each fragrance being respectively named Absinthia (notes of wisteria, vanilla sugar, actual absinthe...) and Absintheo (same notes, with added fig and sandalwood). In our book, it is always worthwhile to stop to smell the wormwood and get dazzled by a beautiful emerald-green color.

About their perfume house, Opus Oils explains "Opus Oils is a Perfume Atelier located in the heart of glamorous Hollywood, CA with a European Division/Workshop in Paris, France.  “Our goal is to create high quality, couture perfumes, made in the traditional methods of the artisan perfumers of centuries past.  Our specialty lines of Boutique Fragrances are hand blended, ‘aged,’ and poured in small batches by our Master Blender, Kedra Hart, one of the developers of The Apothecary at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills.  “We are one of the few, niche perfumers involved in the quickly growing field known as ‘Natural Perfumery.’"  Opus Oils have 160+ products available."

And back to Roller Girl, we learn that "After years of success with their Burlesque Perfume Collection, Opus Oils wanted to maintain their underground/exclusiveness by launching their newest perfume “Roller Girl” at Hollywood’s premier burlesque-themed nightclub. This special night [on May 23rd 2007; sorry for the belated announcement - TSS] will also mark the 100th Performance of Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly - The newest creation from Ivan Kane celebrates the landmark performance of the rock ‘n roll burlesque show that has been featured on Rockstar Supernova and Jimmy Kimmel Live!  Forty Deuce is also set to open their 3rd location this fall in New York in a much-publicized partnership with Sting and David Bowie.

Island Girl

One of my favorite natural perfumers is Kedra Hart of Opus Oils. Even though she started her journey in perfumery using synthetic ingredients, she's seen the direction the wind blows and has created an entire line of purely botanical 'fumes.

Island Girl Collection ~ 100% Natural Perfumes

Island (Hawaiian) ~ Coconut, crooking its sand-and-sea finger in a 'come hither' fashion, is lushly draped over folds of pink lotus, orange blossom, champaka, plumeria, tuberose and pikaki, leaving one's head filled to overflowing with images of soft white beaches, lofty palm trees, warm tropical breezes brushing lightly upon naked skin, and intoxicating drinks served in coconut shells.

Sugar Island (Caribbean) ~ A sugary, sweet confection with a hint of juicy lime. This 'fume imparts 'tropical' shades of buttery coconut and sun-warmed skin, slightly floral and light. It is sexy and sweet and speaks of beach parties, barbeques and swimming under the moonlight.

Tiare (Tahitian) ~ Rich in floral opulence, Tiare is the siren of this bunch. Jasmine, ylang and vanilla create a lush cloud of smooth, creamy sexiness. Coconut, which strolls out about three minutes after the 'fume is applied, brings the perfume together to complete the whole 'Island Girl' motif. I hate to say it, but I'm sorely tempted to lick where this 'fume's been applied. Maybe I should put this on my husband, no?

Mantra (Bali) ~ Mantra reminds me of something ~ something lost in my memories. It opens in shades of vanilla and honey, light and airy, and for a moment I almost smell something bitter, like frankincense. Perhaps it is the oudh that lends the bitter, resinous character. At any rate, I like it. It's more incensey than the rest of the 'Island Girl' collection; softer, quieter and more hypnotic.

Tropique (Madagascar) ~ Tropique is just downright edible! Predominently coconut and vanilla with hints of coffee and cocoa, it's no wonder I want to eat it! This is a very lush, full-bodied 'fume, one that will cause heads to whip 'round & set minds to wonder what it is.
All the 'Island Girl' Collection is fun. I'd recommend getting a few samples and carrying it around in, oh, say, January, when your rear-end is freezing and the heating unit just broke down. Smear a bit under your nose and you'll be transported to a) the beach, b) a warm coffee house, or c) swimming in a cloud of coconut cream!

Kedra Hart's Opus

Now I know why my esteemed editor Kimberly is in such a lather about Opus Oils ~ now that I’ve smelled them that is!

Starlet, a blend of rose, neroli, nutmeg, & bitter orange, is the smell of a fairie’s wing captured in a bottle.  At once light, sweet, & lasting, this is one of my favorites.  Just beautiful.

Isis smells ancient & mysterious, with frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, jasmine, sandalwood, cinnamon, saffron (!), neroli, & vetivert.  Kind of dry & resin-y, with a floral note rising.  The label alone sold me on this one~ Circe poisoning the Sea~ brilliant.

Island will have you drifting off with the exotic scents of coconut, champaca, plumeria, pikake, magnolia, ginger flower, orange blossom absolute, pink lotus, & tuberose.  Tropical, sweet, heady, & heavy.  Very multi faceted, with the tuberose coming through first, then notes of frankincense & myrrh, then all coming up in equal measure.

Kedra perfectly satisfied my craving for coconut with her Tropique oil~ if you’re in the mood for coconut, this blend is spot on! Coconut absolute perfectly balanced with cocoa, coffee bean, vanilla, & yuzo (!), this blend is absotively posolutely edible~ just sweet & yummy. 

Kedra Hart has such a beautiful hand at blending essential oils, & I’m lucky enough to get to try them.
Opus Oils are wonderfully long lasting~ you’ll still smell them at the end of the day.  All oils are in a fractionated coconut oil base, & are packaged beautifully~ you’ll wanna display the bottles & keep the empties.

Kedra excels at custom scent blending; her talent is not to be believed.  Your custom blend is yours alone dolls, so you won’t end up smelling like any other babe on the planet~ how cool is that?!  I gave Kedra an exhaustive list of essential oils that I like, and she concocted the most exceedingly beautiful blends~ rest assured, I’ll be back for more!  You’re not gonna get the whole poop outta me on my personal blends, readers, but I’ll give you just a little taste~ enough to make you drool!

Mystique, a blend that includes patchouli, angelica, & oakmoss, starts out with a kind of Shalimar-y nose, & quickly softens to a sexy, sleepy vamp who just won’t let go.  At once very soft & quiet, while maintaining a lovely strength.
Muse drips with cloying florals, including jasmine sambac, tuberose, & mimosa~ just a drop is enough to set your head spinning.  Pure floral sex.

Opus Oils comes highly recommended~ treat yourself, or concoct an extra special personal gift~ either way, you’ll be a happy, incredible smelling camper!

Beautiful Scents to Blend or Buy A few of my favorite things . . .

Starlet by Opus Oils ~ oh, mama!  Kedra Hart of Opus Oils is a master when it comes to this blending gig.  When I first sniffed this gorgeous parfum, I was immediately taken back to my childhood as memories of my grandmother’s perfume box crowded in on me.  This stuff is heavy, it’s thick, it’s floral and spicy and rich and clean ~ oh, mama!  Just a drop will do and you’re good for the whole day . . . the whole night, even.
